“Dumbo” Reflection

Dumbo is a classic Disney movie about a baby elephant with much too large ears who grows up in a circus while overcoming negative surroundings. It’s a story about endurance and love, and beginning to love oneself. It’s also my favorite movie, for nostalgic reason.

I love the movie Dumbo. The characters, the animation, and the music. Oh, the music. I can’t listen to the song Baby Mine without crying. When I was young, my mother would sing Baby Mine to me to help me sleep, as I wouldn’t go to sleep without it. She would lay down next to me, hold me in her arms and sing the song gently into my ear. Just writing about it brings tears to my eyes. Honestly, I don’t know why it sparks such a reaction in me. I’ve never had a sad experience with the song, yet I can’t even think about it without thinking about crying. The song just makes me incredibly emotional, and yet I love it so much.

Sorry for the low quality!

Dumbo as a character is an extremely pitiful baby elephant. I can’t really relate to him, as I never was really bullied as a child. The only way I can really relate to him is that I love my mother more than anything in the world. When Dumbo’s mother is locked up for protecting Dumbo, he’s left to fend for himself. It evokes emotion in the viewer, and who knows how many times I’ve had to wipe my face while watching this movie.

The animation in the movie is fantastic as well, especially for when it came out (1941). How the characters are animated and how they’re presented especially shows their character and personality within the story. Added to this, the exaggerated features of the humans help the viewer to know that they are both a joke and a threat, as the humans and other elephants are the main antagonists throughout the movie.

I think it all just boils down to nostalgia. I’ve always loved this movie. It allowed me to share an extremely close relationship with my mom and gave me a movie to watch whenever I need to remind myself of my mom. Along with that, the strange parts of the movie add character to it, and make it interesting to watch (like the scene where Dumbo and Timothy get drunk). It’s also one of the shortest movies that Disney has ever made, which adds to the charm of it. It’s short, but it’s still worth the time for anyone who hasn’t seen it to watch it.

The scene where Dumbo and Timothy become drunk on champaine, and the following hallucination of pink elephants.
